State of Emergency : Statement by the Heads of Mission of the European Union in Islamabad
Statement by the Heads of Mission of the European Union in Islamabad
The Heads of Mission of the European Union in Islamabad are gravely concerned by the state of emergency and suspension of Pakistan’s constitution and fundamental liberties announced by President Musharraf on 3 November. They strongly reiterate the importance they attach to the Government holding free and fair elections on schedule, to restoration of civilian rule and to respect for the independence of the judiciary and freedom of the media. They encourage all concerned to show restraint and to work together for a peaceful and democratic resolution. In particular, they urge President Musharraf to pursue political reconciliation in the national interest, and call for the restoration of constitutional order and the release of all political detainees as soon as possible.
The Heads of Mission recognize that Pakistan faces threats to its peace and security, but believe that stability and development can only be achieved with democracy and the rule of law. The European Union has raised its concerns about these developments at the highest levels.
